I was at some kind of fair and there was an year-end competition on stage for combat skills. Everyone had their own specialty that they’d trained all year for and mine was archery. However, I had somehow lost my bow and instead grabbed a cardboard cutout of sword and walked onto stage. I tried to blend in with the rest of the crowd.

After getting off stage I started asking around for a friend who had promised to meet up at the fair. Everyone assumed that he was still overseas but I insisted that he must be around somewhere. I finally found him among the stalls crouching down low and with a plastic toy pressed against his ear. He stood up in surprise when he saw me. “Wow, you’ve gotten tall”, I said. We hadn’t met in well over two decades. “Well, that is the idea” he said. I handed him a pin of some anime character.
