I was attending a game conference and was asked to the introduce someone onto the stage. I turned down the invitation and stayed in my seat. They went on to show off a prototype for a 3D platformer. The placeholder art was made out of orange and gray spheres in a grid environment. The game mostly revolved around physics puzzles and maneuvering through the stage with various kinds of jumps. There was a puzzle that involved swinging a weight attached to a balloon to get across a gap. At the end of the demo I wanted to ask how they planned to differentiate this game from all of the other physics-based platformers but I held back for too long and missed my chance. The voice actors for the upcoming game were apparently all close friends from Nanaimo.

The awards show continued as Gex was named as Game of the Year.

I returned to my hotel room (219) and thought about throwing out the trash but it was already past 11 PM. The main school building where we’d usually dump our garbage was closed for the day. I put a bag of trash in the doorway so I wouldn’t forget about it in the morning. I walked up to the balcony and saw that the umbrella I put there earlier in the day was about to be blown away, only hanging onto the railing by the knob on its handle.

I woke up with my mouth feeling parched. I took a swig of rice wine and water.
