I was helping as a volunteer at an anime convention which allowed me to skip not only the lines but also a pop culture quiz that was supposed to filter a portion of the attendees. My first task was leading people through the entrance of the convention hall.

The inside of the hall looked like a large empty gym. I realized this meant that a majority of the booths weren’t even set up yet. I wasn’t really sure where to start and wandered aimlessly until someone asked me to move a large cart full of wooden blocks to the other side. I did what I was told without really asking questions myself, only to find myself awkwardly rolling the cart in hopes that whoever actually needed them would call for me. All of my attempts of communicating through focused eye contact only yielded strange stares in return.
