We were meeting at the beach in preparation for next week’s school trip. All of us gathered under the spotlight shining down from the raised platform by the water. It was dark out and the sea was bordered off by sheets of tarp on all three sides. The difference in salinity from the edge of the water to the deep end was so great that you could feel the change in buoyancy.

The twenty or so of us were being briefed on the social norms of the place we were going to. We were asked to not do anything that would be perceived as gay in said country.

I told the person next to me that it felt like it has been forever since we last had a school trip. I was beginning to wonder if we had skipped our annual trips last year.

Our school assignment was to research the attitudes towards nuclear weapons in various countries.
