I needed to rest after being in the practice rooms for the entire day so I walked outside and laid down on the pavement in front of the auditorium. It was the night of Halloween and people were milling about on the quad in their costumes. It was still a weekday however, so not that many people were actually out and about.
“It’s already nighttime”, I thought to myself before sitting up. I had wasted enough time already and needed to get back to work. I stood up and walked towards the campus center. Someone who I thought I had recognized was sitting in a folding chair in the middle of the path. I waved at him as I passed by, quickly realizing it wasn’t who I thought it was when I saw his face.
I continued walking forward as if nothing had happened when I heard my Chinese nickname being called out. I quickly turned around to see that it was the person sitting in the chair. I awkwardly walked back towards him before he told me that we used to be friends from our childhood. “So that’s why he looked familiar” I thought, even though I had no recollection of this guy who, based on his ramblings, seemed to have a lot of memories of our shared youth.
