I said nothing as I stood by the round dining table as a friend’s family dinner was beginning. By the end of the meal, everyone was looking at another guest as silence fell over the room. Unable to handle the awkward tension, I stepped out onto the street. It was dark, but I knew where to turn to get back onto the main street.

I was holding an empty flower pot which I then set onto the sidewalk. I recalled how house-cats tended to stray from their homes in a 2.5 km radius. A black cat crossed the road to jump into the pot as a sign of disagreement.
