Nuclear war had broken out between the United States and Russia during its military campaign into Southeast Asia. As a result, most of Canada had been nuked and now remained as a radioactive wasteland. It was technically under Russian control but so few people lived here for the claims to mean much.
I walked under the tree to get closer to a bird in the plaza. It didn’t seem to be afraid of me so I assumed that it must have been waiting for something to happen. There were a couple of voices coming from around the corner behind me.
“They threw everything out, but when we need things [for the club] we just pick them back out from the trash.”
The three of us sat on the wooden park bench for our club meeting. We each had a speech prepared for a position in our student government. I took out my laptop and logged in when the person to the left of me asked, “Is your password really just ‘100%’?”
“No.” I responded, while quickly minimizing my browser that was still open for some reason. “It just looks like that when I type it in”
I rehearsed my one minute thirty speech about “emoji leadership”* which was so over the top and embarrassing but it turned out that they both liked it.
One of them told me that they had bought Smash 4 with our club funds and when I asked why they simply replied “Why not?”
– *Imagine a verbal performance of emojipasta (why)
