We were waiting for class to begin as we sat around the table that occupied most of the space in the room. A dog was next to my seat and licked my right hand when I held it out. I received a an e-mail notification on my phone from my bank detailing that there had either been suspicious activity on my account or that my balance was in the negative. I quickly opened the Chase app to check my balance but was unable to connect to the Internet.

The professor brought us out into the parking lot to discuss our next research paper. We were supposed to analyze the portrayal of “otherness” in a novel through a close reading of a 50 second music video that was based on a character within said novel. We watched this video being projected in the parking lot as we were given a 3 week deadline. The video itself seemed to be a montage parody with frog croaking sounds and flashing lights. In the center was a frontal shot of a running man with an upside down face and upturned nose.

When we were dismissed, everyone dispersed in different directions. One group was talking about how financial aid was “no laughing matter” as they had required financial support for over the last 23 years of their life.
