We had just lost our third member. It didn’t help that they had taken most of our food reserves with them. The only thing left between the two of us were a handful of carrots.

I was trying to plant what we had left in our small plot of land when I realized the soil was inundated. A saw a rabbit crawl out of its flooded den, wet but otherwise oblivious. I looked to the wall and there was a graphic about how the iguana trade from Indonesia was now illegal and rabbits were on the rise.

I chopped up the carrots in my hand, wondering if each piece would individually sprout if I buried them.
